Focusing on Alignment & Function

Orthodontics focuses on how your teeth are positioned and how your bite functions. When teeth are misaligned, it can affect how you chew and how pressure is distributed across your teeth, causing uneven wear, crowding, and other concerns. It can also make it difficult to keep your teeth clean.

At 320 Dental Studio, Dr. Haack evaluates your bite as part of your overall oral health. Treatment is planned to improve function and support long-term stability of the teeth. Alignment can also affect the surrounding structures. In many cases, correcting the position of the teeth and jaws can help reduce strain on certain teeth and support more balanced function across the bite. A palate that is wide enough helps to open the airway space. A properly developed arch can support better airflow and overall oral function.

Early Orthodontic Evaluation

Assessing Development

An orthodontic evaluation is recommended for children at around the age of 7. At this stage, a mix of baby and adult teeth are present, making it ideal for Dr. Haack to assess how the teeth and jaws are developing. Not all children will need treatment at this age. In many cases, monitoring growth over time is all that is required. If early treatment is recommended, it is typically to guide development and reduce the risk of more complex issues later on. Early orthodontic evaluation also allows space, alignment, and jaw growth to be assessed before problems become more difficult to manage.

What to Expect from an Orthodontic Evaluation

A Clear Look at Alignment and Next Steps

During an orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Haack will evaluate how the teeth are positioned and how the bite comes together. This may include digital imaging, photos, and a review of jaw development. From there, you will be given an overview of what your alignment is currently like, whether treatment is recommended, and what treatments may be appropriate. If treatment is not needed right away, growth and development may be monitored over time.

Interceptive Orthodontics

Guiding Development Early

Interceptive orthodontics refers to treatment provided while a child is still growing. It is focused on guiding jaw development and creating space for the incoming adult teeth. It may help reduce crowding and improve how the teeth come together. Treatment is completed in phases, with time between each stage to allow for natural growth.

Space Maintainers

Making Way for the Adult Teeth

When a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected, the nearby teeth can shift into the space. Space maintainers are used to hold that space open so adult teeth can come in as expected. They are typically small, fixed appliances, and are removed once the adult tooth is ready to erupt.

Palatal Expanders

Creating Room and Supporting Development

A palatal expander is a device used to widen the upper jaw. It is used to create space for crowded teeth and improve how the upper and lower teeth fit together. In some cases, expanding the upper arch may also support improved flow through the airway. Treatment is most effective while the jaw is still developing.

Braces

Traditional Orthodontic Treatment

Braces are used to gradually move teeth into better alignment. While clear aligners are popular, braces with metal brackets are sometimes recommended for more complex cases where greater control over tooth movement is needed. Braces are adjusted over time to guide the teeth into position. Adjustments are made at regular intervals to continue progress and keep treatment moving as planned. The length of treatment will vary depending on your unique case.

Clear Aligners

A Discreet Option for Teens and Adults

Clear aligners are used to move teeth gradually using a series of custom-made trays. They are removable and sit closely over the teeth, making them a less noticeable option compared to traditional braces.

Clear aligners are often chosen by adult patients who want to improve alignment without fixed appliances. Because they can be removed, aligners allow for normal brushing and flossing and do not require the same adjustments as braces. They can be used for a range of cases, depending on the level of correction needed.

Retainers

Maintaining Results After Treatment

After orthodontic treatment, retainers are used to help keep your teeth in their new position. Without retention, teeth can gradually shift over time, causing more problems with your bite. Retainers may be removable or fixed, depending on the type of treatment completed and what is recommended by your dentist.

Wearing retainers as advised helps maintain alignment and protects your results. Sometimes long-term use is recommended, especially at night, to help prevent gradual movement over time.
